If we regard Buddha statues and votive texts as an image/text system of works of art, then images and texts are mutually externalized and interpreted.
When studying Buddhist statues in the Northern and Southern Dynasties during his PHD, Jia Hongjun got inspiration, applied this "image-text" system to his own creation, and explored traditional culture in a contemporary way.
Jia Hongjun has been thinking: How does Chinese contemporary art treat its own traditions from different angles and aspects?
Trained in Western printmaking and Chinese religious art history, his work takes on a recognizable form - "Amulet" and "Wish". "Amulet" is the image, an independent symbol system with specific meaning created by Jia Hongjun. In order to interpret the "Amulet"(符), Jia constructed a corresponding interpretation system based on Chinese Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism - the "Wish"（祝）, which is hidden behind the picture. "Amulet" and "Wish" complement each other, construct each other, and create each other's meanings.
His painting（Amulet） is presented in a contemporary abstract form, and is completely different from traditional ink painting in both theme and material. Most of artworks' writing system(Wish) are in the style of ancient Chinese, and they are often inspired by Buddhist scriptures and ancient books. However, the content of Wish is related to the current events. In other words, Jia Hongjun's works integrate "poetry, painting and calligraphy" into a whole, looking for a contemporary expression in traditional elements.
No matter from the core of the work, the subject matter, the form of expression, or the ideas expressed by the artist, his artworks' mission is contemporary and change-seeking. It is the artist's repeated explorations in the field of contemporary art from a global perspective, and also a reflection on the artist's self. Combining the image of "Amulet" and “Wish” in traditional culture with the form of contemporary art, Jia Hongjun's works present critical and practical significance. His works and exhibitions have been reported by domestic and foreign media for many times, and his works have shown good results in international auctions.
