Jūlija Kanto is a Latvian artist and educator based in Daugavpils, Latvia. Her artistic practice is closely connected with painting, historical atmosphere, nature, and emotional landscapes. In her works, she often explores dramatic seascapes, night scenes, warm light, medieval and mythological motifs, as well as the contrast between danger and hope.
Her paintings are characterized by expressive skies, stormy seas, lighthouses, ancient architecture, firelight, and mysterious visual narratives. Jūlija is inspired by history, northern landscapes, traditional culture, and the power of nature. Her works often create the feeling of a story hidden inside the image — a moment before or after an important event.
Alongside her artistic practice, Jūlija works as a teacher and is actively involved in creative and educational projects. Her interest in art, science, ecology, and cultural heritage influences both her visual language and the themes she chooses to develop. She also creates handmade works and textile-based objects, combining traditional craft skills with contemporary artistic expression.
Through her art, Jūlija seeks to preserve a sense of memory, atmosphere, and human connection with the past, while also reflecting on the fragile relationship between people and nature. Her creative work is rooted in personal observation, imagination, and a deep respect for craftsmanship and tradition.
