Karl Jorns was born in Colombia from German father and
Spanish mother, an interesting mixture that would then shape his style and work
far into the future. He began his path in Architecture in Brazil,
specializing in theatre costumes and fashion clothes. Here, he was very
involved in the artistic movement of the late 80's: a great inspiration and
starting point for his artistic career and artwork. Having developed an
interest for fashion and textiles specifically, he then decided to
move to Florence to study at the prestigious Polimoda. After graduating, he
worked for a series of well established textile companies where he gained in
depth experience with textiles and their technicality. All of these elements
would be vital in his later encounter with Margherita, to establish La Serra MK
Textile Atelier. He is currently still teaching and lecturing in Textile
Design.
Since 1996, in
parallel with my teaching and work activity in the field of textile industry, I
dedicate myself to the artistic activity of printing and hand painting on
fabric. Never disregarding the industrial print techniques, it is my wish to
explore and to keep alive the artistic possibilities of craftsmanship, which
have always been characteristic of the territory in which I live and work.
Aiming to this, my
interest has gradually grown from printing itself to the physical modification
of the fabric, creating unique works. In my work I seek
the creation of a moving tridimensional surface, using, printing and colour
effects. I intend to recall nature and its organic elements, to evokes a
sensation of fluidity, movement, the deepness, the fusion, the consistency and
the vegetal, animal and human forms.
