“Leave a little sparkle
wherever you go.”
Mumbai-based Shruti Jhaveri is a
renowned artist specialising in mixed media artworks.
Born and raised in Antwerp,
Belgium, her passion for art was ignited in school and she has not looked back
since. She studied from the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Belgium,
and followed it up with some early experiments in creating artworks using wood,
metal and plastic.
Since 2003, Shruti has been residing and
working in Mumbai, but has showcased her work across the globe, with 25 shows
in India, Belgium, Indonesia, Korea, Dubai and New York.
In 2012, she began exploring paper sculptures
to create splendid pieces borne out of months of introspection and research.
The fluid forms are inspired by natural life, and its organic ebb and flow.
Shruti believes in using environmentally
friendly, sustainable materials to create art that speaks volumes. Her primary
material of use is shredded wastepaper, collected from the large and small
companies.
The sculptures are fluid, organic and
mid-flow, drawing inspiration from similar forms and phases of an individual’s
lifespan. In her words, “Each work showcases a golden period of
one’s life.”
Shruti was affected by the destruction
of underwater life forms by manmade pollution. She translated the beauty of
these underwater beings into telling pieces that increase awareness about this
cause.
The
pieces display a comfortable contrast – they look fragile, feel delicate and
weigh less, but are sturdy and durable for the long run. The idea is to create
at that leaves a lasting impression, with a strong underlying message of its
origin and the impact it hopes to make.
