His roots are embedded in a musical
environment: when he was 17 years old, he started studying electronic music in
SEM, a part of the Antwerp conservatory, before beginning his studies in
musicology at the KUL University (Leuven, Belgium). There he became more and
more interested in video-art and events, making his first steps as a visual
artist, while still working on musical projects too, like ‘Pedal Point’, a
project for 200-600 improvising musicians.
Starting from the mid-90s he concentrated
on his professional career as a communications specialist, to return gradually to
the world of art around 2018. He now works on photographic series,
photocollage, videos, installations, land art, minimal music and musique
concrète.
His main themes are time – as an
experienced time, but also abstract timelapses on a global level - , politics,
intertextuality (with a lot of winks towards historical references), the use of
media and their integration, humor, food, and processes that develop over time.
Guido Janssens is part of the artists
collectives The Muybridge Collective and Grosses Lacunes and is one of the
curators of the ‘La Cellule’ gallery in Charleroi, Belgium. Until now, his own
exhibitions have mainly taken place in an institutional context or in the
Belgian historical heritage.
