Nick Inguanez (b.1993) is a visual artist and junior architect based in Malta. His background, focusing on architectural conservation and heritage, has embedded within him a critical outlook towards the local context, from which he constantly derives inspiration. His art is best described as a contemporary layering of expressionism. Links between the built & the spiritual environment, the historic & the contemporary, and time & collective memory are the primary themes in his upcoming work.
Inguanez has carried out his art education under the tutelage of artist Kevin Sciberras at St Aloysius College, Birkirkara, Malta, from 2005 to 2011. He then set out on a self-taught journey, seeking inspiration from his surroundings, architectural theory and contemporary discourse, whilst continuing to develop his technique and process in his studio. Amongst his highly influential idols are contemporary figurative and landscape artists Jenny Saville and Peter Doig, whose works both encompass the ideals of the traditional technique of pigment painting, presenting authentic representations of self-experience which are tinged with memory and expressed through the physical manifestation of the brushwork.
The artist has participated in editions of the National Annual collective exhibitions held at the Malta Society of Arts at Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta, as well as the Malta Arts Expression Exhibitions held at the Cavalieri Art Hotel, St Julians, Malta in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Inguanez held his first solo exhibition ‘Views of Valletta’ at Casa Ellul, Valletta, and has held his second solo exhibition 'Aesthetics of Disappearance' in September 2018 at the Malta Society of Arts, in Valletta. He is currently a project leader aiding the artistic director for the MICAS (Malta International Contemporary Art Space) concept launch. His work is found in private collections locally and abroad.
