Jaewook Hwang is a visual artist born in Busan, South Korea, and currently based on Jeju Island. He studied Painting and Video Art at Hansung University in Seoul and has maintained an active artistic practice since graduating.
Working across painting, sculpture, and mixed media—including resin, sand, and oil paint—Hwang explores the transformation of memory through material. Drawing from personal recollections of his hometown and childhood, his work moves between abstraction and figuration, examining how memories are preserved, altered, and reconstructed over time. Through layered surfaces and tactile materials, he seeks to visualize the emotional distance between lived experience and remembrance.
Hwang has presented three solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in South Korea and internationally. His work has been featured in a juried group exhibition at RIVAA Gallery, New York, and selected for ASYAAF (Asian Students and Young Artists Art Festival), one of South Korea's leading exhibitions for emerging artists. He also received the Special Prize at the Korea International Contemporary Art Competition and has completed commissioned public art projects in South Korea.
Currently based on Jeju, Hwang continues to expand his exploration of memory through a multidisciplinary practice that bridges painting, material experimentation, and installation.
