Alexander Hohla is a sculptor who unites the precision of a physicist with the intuition of an artist. Trained in experimental physics with a specialization in lasers, he spent years studying the behavior of light before turning to marble—a medium through which he now explores structure, material, and form in a tangible, enduring way. His transition from science to sculpture is a story of reinvention, driven by a deep curiosity about the nature of balance: between strength and lightness, structure and spontaneity, tradition and transformation.
Born in 1968 in Munich, Germany, Hohla earned his degree in physics from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in 1996 and completed a doctorate in human biology at the Laser Research Institute in Grosshadern in 2002, focusing on tumor detection using UV light. That same year, a sculpting course in Carrara, Italy, sparked a profound shift in his path. Largely self-taught, he honed his skills through courses and symposia across Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, later working alongside master sculptors including Josef Lang and Stipe Lucić.
In 2015, Hohla established his own studio in Vrhovčak, Samobor, Croatia, where he continues to develop a body of work marked by technical precision, emotional depth, and a contemporary sensibility. Whether in private collections or public spaces, his sculptures invite contemplation and connection—anchors in space that speak to resilience, harmony, and the enduring dialogue between science and art.
