About my work:
In my art I am stretched between two disciplines, abstract
and figurative paintings.
The greater part of my work is figurative. I paint
heads, not portraits; that is to say I try to catch a glimpse of a human soul
as expressed in a model’s face, without relying on the norms and strictures of
portraiture. My heads capture what is alive in a model behind appearance.
The counterpart to my figurative works are my abstract paintings. I enjoy the development of a piece unfold from start to finish.
I began my career as an abstract painter and continue to work in abstract forms even after I began to explore the possibilities of the human face. In some ways, the abstract pieces are studies for my portraits, on the integration of subject and background and how to free oneself from one's own reference. I look to Matisse as the greatest master of this back-and-forth of portraiture and pure abstraction.
