My work is based on photography and now also on video-art. I use myself and my body as the object, whilst also telling the stories of other women with very specific traumas. In this regard, all my work is preceded by a research process in very close contact with those people captured by my camera lens.
Each of the scenes pictured in my photos is a metaphor, a subjective recreation of the proposal I defend as a new interpretation of the body. As my work deals with women, I build certain spaces for feminism which, rather than follow the latest gender theories, reveal a deviation, a personal way of assuming female identity and the values and cultural assumptions on which it is conceived. Thus, all my work focuses not only on an aesthetic narration, but a cultural and social one as well, one in which the consciousness of an era where women have conquered their autonomy despite the many stigmas that still hunt them as part of a historical conflict, is permanently questioned.
My biggest influences have been Frida Kahlo, Ana Mendieta and Iris Van Herper, women who in their art have made clear references to life and death.
My work is directed and intended for an audience who is able to see beyond the mere nudity and see the story told in the "scenes" I create. Also, meant for women to feel they are protagonists within art and are given a voice to express themselves through my work.
I use my own anxiety as inspiration during my creative process and the many sensations it provokes in me. The thought processes I experience during my anxiety attacks are a big source of inspiration and the underlying trauma which goes back to childhood experiences are also present during my creation. Also, the macho society I live in and encounter every time I leave my house and walk down the streets of Havana, the behavior of men towards women in a social environment and women’s response, play a key role in how I translate it later into my own art.
