"By nature I am an instinctive
painter. A couple of sketches in and I
am ready to paint. For many years I
painted representational art in an impressionist/expressionist style of
painting. However, I found that even
though I enjoyed painting people, animals and landscapes in this style to be
rewarding, it wasn’t giving me the creative freedom I was longing for. I wanted to create art that gave me freedom from
the rules and constraints of traditionally styled artwork while still being
representational in form. So, taking
inspiration from artists such as Keith Haring, Pablo Picasso and Georges
Braque, I began to paint in an illustrative cubist style with a touch of surrealism. The drawing is simple, angular and
defined. The colours are saturated,
bright, layered and bold. For
me it is freeing. It is fun. It is happiness. The characters who appear in my art come from
my imagination combined with my real-life experiences."
