Diana García is the
real name of Diana Gardeneira, visual artist, graphic designer, feminist and
activist. Born in 1981, she's Ecuadorian and Costar Rican, and lives and works
in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Her artistic career
started focusing her attention in the formal and physical aspects of the space
that she inhabits. Living abroad made her open up to other cultures and social
realities, rebelling against everything that she has learned. Later on, feminism
made her reflect on identity and normalized violence. This created a path for
her feminist activism and community work in her city. She’s also cofounder of
the art collective La Gallina Malcriada (The Misbehaved Hen), and together with
3 women artists, organize events to create feminine networks, so that women can
get to know, support, and promote each other.
Her work has been
exhibited in local and international galleries, as well as museums. In 2019,
she was part of Bienalsur (Argentina), Bilbao Art District (Spain). She has won
first prize of July Salon 2019 and second prize of October Salon 2018 both in
Guayaquil. She has also won government funding (on 2018) to develop part of the project
“I'll do everything to you”, which focuses on creating safe spaces to talk about
gender violence.
