Man Yu is an interdisciplinary artist, humanist, vegan, and environmentalist. Born in Hong Kong, she settled in Costa Rica when her family emigrated in search of peace. Although painting has been the medium in which he has stood out the most, he incorporates multidisciplinary techniques such as installation, video and performance.
Much of his work focuses on awareness through the decipherment of the different layers of the human being, such as the astral body, the psychic, the spiritual, now, the virtual. With this, his work goes through anti xenophobic and anti homophobic activism, when dealing with the identity of being in all its facets, physical and intangible. But what Man Yu most seeks in his work is to generate some existential questions that can suggest the viewer to self-study and self-discovery.
He has participated in multiple national and international exhibitions, his works are in prominent collections, such as the Post Office and the Ministry of Culture of China, the Hanwei International Group, the Costa Rican Center for Science and Culture, the National Bank of Costa Rica and Juan Santamaria Airport.
Man Yu has obtained important awards such as best short film at the European International Film Festival and the declaration of Costa Rican national cultural interest. As Essential Costa Rica official ambassador, she represented the country at Museari Queer Art in Valencia 2021, the Camagüey International Video Art Festival 2021, at the Beijing 2019 Latin American Art Festival, in the issuance of commemorative envelopes of the 2019 China Postal Service, the Beijing Biennial 2017, at the La Neomudéjar Museum in Madrid 2021. It is part of the performance mapping “Central America in Action” published by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design and supported by the Jumex Contemporary Art Foundation.
