In 1980,
Filipino artist George Guerrero Facelo made the bold choice to enlist in the US
Navy, turning down a prestigious painting scholarship in France earned through
a national art competition. The transition to America was a significant
challenge, but he embraced it fully, dedicating himself to military service
while maintaining his artistic ambitions. With unwavering determination, he
carved out time to hone his craft, mastering the “Abstract Expressionism” style
in acrylic.
During Boot
Camp, his Company Commander recognized his artistic talents and assigned him to
print the Plan of the Day on the chalkboard for his fellow recruits. He created
sign paintings for Regiment offices and designed the company’s "Hell Flag"
as the flag bearer. While on a US Navy ship, his paintings were chosen for
permanent display at the Navy Combat Art Museum in Washington, D.C. In 1983, he
won First Prize and "Best of Show" at the USN Southern Pacific
Regional Arts and Crafts Fair in San Diego.
In the
mid-1990s, he decisively immersed himself in his art, claiming First Prize in
the Poway Artists’ Guild Annual Art competition. He also secured the “Best of
Show” in the St. Mark’s Methodist Church Annual Religious Art competitions,
along with numerous accolades in local art exhibitions throughout San Diego.
George has
been exhibiting his paintings since his Fine Arts studies at the University of
Santo Tomas in Manila. He is a former member of Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach and
the Coronado Art Association in San Diego. Avaulte Art represents his “Linear Expression” paintings.
Since
retiring from federal service in 2020, George has dedicated himself to
establishing his art career, actively creating new works at his studios in San
Diego, California, and San Felipe, Zambales, Philippines.
