Maria Esthela

Maria Esthela is a Honduran-Canadian self-taught multi-disciplinary artist based in the unceded territory of Tkaronto (Toronto), who has exhibited her work in Canada and abroad.

Investigating the adaptation and evolution of consciousness, she examines how identity, memory, the bodymind, and spacetime adapt through a diffractive shaping of material and meaning. Her personal neuro-cultural lens—shaped by the recurrent geographic and linguistic ebb and flow of her life—focuses on a universal truth and paradoxical tension: vulnerability is the catalyst for collective wonder and connection.

She engages with sculpture, installation, and drawing in a non-linear exploration of emergence, immanence, and entanglement.

Guided by research and meditation, her practice is handmade, methodical, and site-responsive. Her process is intuitive, discursive, repetitive, and tactile, following the movement of thought as it expands and multiplies, revealing elusive patterns and perspectives that playfully gesture toward the ineffable ecstasy that weaves itself within the ordinary.

Working with materials that coincide in their optical properties, she interprets the language of light by arranging them into coded rhythms; a poetic proposal on the recursive nature of spacetime and the interagency of energymatter.

The abstract language she has developed seeks to evoke thoughtful lightness and emotional gravitas, drawing lines of inquiry and points of reflection that trace and transcend the realm of reason. Her work suspends and diffracts linear thought, elevating our attention to what lies between and beyond.
