BIOGRAPHY
The art of Monika El-Seroui has been shaped by two cultures: born and raised within the conservative social structure in the medieval town Graz in her homeland Austria and that of Egypt where she settled. She followed quite at an early age her artistic leanings. Despite her artistic leanings (supported by her art teacher to continue an artistic path) she took a commercial oriented profession. At the age of 23 she travelled and settled down in Egypt. Work, family and social responsibilities left little time for painting for many years. Her social contacts (supported by her knowledge of Arabic and English language) at her work at the Austrian Cultural Institute in Cairo and later at a German company outlet enabled her to present her artistic works. She returned to Austria in 1995 and gave her artistic leanings more and more time. Together with her son she opened an antiquity shop (Art Nouveau and Art Deco) which gave her the possibility to exhibit her paintings and drawings in the shop. The diversity of both cultures greatly influenced her expressions as a self-taught artist. Most of all it left a legacy of great sensibility towards social contemporary trends.
