DARIE DUP is working in sculpture, installation, site
specifics, photography and, last but not least, he loves to put his ideas into
large scale drawings.
He make use of
various dimensions, textures and materials such as: wood, bronze, resins, mixed
media, new media. He often adopts materials with a perceivable sense of humor.
Although following
different phases of evolution in his visual research, his interest coagulates
around 2 main topics, (which are to be perceived both directly or in a more
subtle-sophisticated manner): the human body – or parts of it (most recently
the Ears, the Eyes), and the tree - as axis mundi, as support of the human
life, as beneficial element often endangered by human destructive behaviors.
The 2 themes often interfere as
in the most recent work Eyes in the old Forest- installation (referring to Dino
Buzzati novel “The Secret of the Old Woods”) where the eyes are suggesting the
presence of invisible spirits, witchcraft's, mystery and esoteric knowledge. The
aesthetic of the fragment grants metaphorical dimensions and the subtle irony
is one of the favorite methods of Dup’s visual speech.
An outstanding representative
of the Romanian sculptors generations of the ‘80s-90s, Dup is nowadays
permanently actualizing the forms of expressing himself and his work now
displays more contemporary techniques, being strongly concerned with acute
problems of the actual world – such ecology and the preserving of the planet.
