Ana Doolin is a Portuguese painter who lives between Lisbon and Maui, where she has made her home for the past seventeen years. Before that, she spent a decade in Chicago, carrying with her the constant presence of her native Lisbon — a city that shaped her artistic vision from an early age.
Her passion for painting began in childhood, while studying at a Catholic boarding school in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto. There, under the guidance of a nun who was also a gifted artist, Ana discovered the joy of giving form and color to her inner world. She later graduated in Classical Studies from the University of Lisbon, where she went on to work as an assistant professor, teaching Latin and deepening her knowledge of classical literature and history — influences that continue to echo in her art.
Self-taught as a painter, Ana has exhibited regularly in the juried Art Maui exhibitions at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, where her work was selected in five different years. In 2018 she received the State Recognition Award from the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and her work is now part of the Foundation’s permanent collection.
Her paintings, often vivid in color and bold in composition, are shaped by the duality of her life between Lisbon and Maui. They reflect the light and architecture of her birthplace, the lush landscapes of Hawaii, and a sensibility that sees color not as decoration but as life itself
