My name is Stefano Dealessandri [he/him] (*98, IT) and I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Germany. Born and raised in a small village in north Italy, I then moved to Germany at the age of seventeen years old. Since then I have been working and studying in Dresden, Dublin, Berlin, Hamburg and Jerusalem. I studied visual communication at the HAW Hamburg majoring in New Media by Prof. Aram Bartholl and visual communication and architecture at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Currently I am an artist in residence at Fabrica research center in Treviso, Italy researching on the newly implemented mass surveillance system in Venice.
My practice revolves around the investigations of the environment(s) I am surrounded by, their materiality and inherent »glitches«—starting point for questioning our normative understanding of the visual and verbal spaces we as users, agents and viewers inhabit. My recent projects explore mass tourism and postcolonial structures and the way they affect our notions of (simulated) property, production, and ecology. Furthermore, my works deal with the notion of »Raum«—German word referring to both room and space—and the way we as users and agents relate to and perform in them. From three-dimensional, haptic »Räume« to two-dimensional printed or digital ones, I am deeply fascinated by the intimate (inter)spaces resulting from their hybridization.
Since 2019 I am active member of the curatorial team at Frappant Galerie in Hamburg (DE), where in collaboration with Dieter Singer and Johannes Hassenstein I cofounded the online exhibition space »4. Raum« (https://dervierteraum.org) — a dynamic platform for conceptual, time based and performative exhibition formats that happen outside the realm of the white cube. The online space is meant to function as an extension of the Hamburg project space Frappant Galerie to create new contextual meaning.
