I’m a South Korean painter, living and working in London since 2005. Initially earning a business degree in Korea and working in commerce there, I soon made a decision to leave that path and follow my artistic passions. I travelled extensively for a number of years, before studying Fine Art and Critical Studies at Goldsmiths College, London - graduating in 2009, and establishing my practice in the UK. I initially started painting with a predominately abstract approach to colour and form, but in more recent years I have positioned myself equally as close to the figurative. I work mainly in oils, and canvas but watercolours are also a favoured medium. I’m enthralled by colour, and so am naturally drawn to compositions featuring such rich natural phenomenon as the sky, fire and sea. I’m fascinated by how the sky has been used as both a stage and a subject in the history of art. For me there is a link between a working canvas and the open expanse of the sky - the evolving forms and colours of both able to grow into the subtle and the spectacular. The infinite nature of the sky as it extends into space also lends itself to spiritual and existential references. For me the titles are an important part of the final piece, as they play a part in setting the stage for the viewers interpretations of any narrative inferred. Directly or indirectly referencing aspects of daily life, history and current affairs, ambiguity is prevalent in much of my work. A recurring context is human activity and aspiration set against the purity of nature. Themes such as the diaspora and migrations of modern times and the contrast of technology used for aspirational science and exploration vs destruction and deterrent are staged in compositions that share allegorical references such as kites and rockets. Other motifs range from inanimate objects, through to weather and the human form.
