MayC. / May Caiwei Chen is a multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, visual art experimentalist, and dreamology enthusiast graduated from BFA Graphic Design at ArtCenter College of Design and MFA Art and Technology program at CalArts. By engaging with both art and technology, MayC. is passionate about immersive narratives through interactive and communicative visuals and sounds. Her artistic practice spans an array of media, including motion graphics, brand identity systems, photography, traditional & digital art, AI/ML, projection mapping and interactive installation.
In both fields of art and design, her work often explores the concept of dreams and how they work as portraits of human natures, sentiments, memories and identities. She dives deep down into subconsciousness, probes the ambiguities and boundaries between “actuality” and “virtuality”, and explores how a dream could be reinvestigated and rebuilt as an illusional sensory experience that invites the audience to imbue in, resonate, and contribute to the collective unconscious of dreamscapes.
MayC.’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Part Crowd Art Gallery in Toronto, Canada; Santa Paula Art Museum in Santa Paula, CA; UTA Artist Space in Los Angeles, CA; Gallery CA in Baltimore, MD; and Guangzhou Museum, Redtory Museum of Contemporary Art in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. MayC. is the recipient of various awards including People’s Vote Award in 2023 World Photo Annual held by reFocus Awards, Entry Prize of “30 Under 30” exhibition by Santa Paula Art Museum in 2024, Finalist Awards of Shades of Red 2024 art contest held by Camelback Gallery and 10th Leaves & Petals Art Exhibition held by Fusion Art Gallery, and the First and Second Prizes of Fine Arts category in the 20th National Middle School Student Painting & Calligraphy Contest in China. MayC. used to work as a graphic designer and digital artist at WEBTOON & Sony Pictures Entertainment during her internships with main clients including HBO, ABC, NBC, Hulu, Netflix, Quibi, Pop TV, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Showtime, and Spectrum.
