Born and brought up in Kenya, I am now based in Somerset, UK. After graduation from Byam School of Art (Fine Art: sculpture, distinction), London in the ‘80s, years teaching and raising my son as a single mum, I gained a Masters in Fine Art (distinction) at Bath Spa University in 2018. I exhibit throughout UK and internationally. Alongside my art practice, I work with the community on collaborative art projects, hold residencies, run courses and lead workshops.
I was awarded Arts Council funding for my ambitious project ‘step in stone’ in 2015, involving site-specific artscapes in Mendip quarries with 14 international artists. I curated and featured in the multidisciplinary event, which linked culture, environment and community. In 2019, I co-curated and featured in B-Wing, an ACE-funded project at Shepton Mallet Prison. This involved 8 artists and writers creating site-responsive artworks across 3 floors of the prison wing as an immersive experience.
In 2020 I won the Red Line Art Works Award for my environmental sculptural installations Snakes and Ladders, Glut and Accretion. In 2019, I was selected for a Royal Society of Sculptors Gilbert Bayes Award culminating in RSS GBA Winners exhibition, London and becoming a Member of RSS. Through representation at Maureen Michaelson Gallery, I was commissioned to create a 4m hand woven canopy as a focal piece for Sarah Eberle’s Viking Cruises Mekong Garden, Chelsea Flower Show 2016, which won gold and best artisan garden. In 2018 I was awarded a research fellowship to take part in Ingruttati Palermo workshop and exhibition, a collateral 5x5x5 event, part of Manifesta12. I was highly commended for my work as Green Capital Artist in Residence ’12, culminating in exhibitions at the Arnolfini, Harbour and Create Centre, Bristol.
During lockdown this year, I developed a project Life in the Undergrowth, for which I received an ACE Emergency Response fund. Inspired by small hidden worlds in my garden that often get overlooked, it became a circular process - garden feeding art and art feeding garden. In isolation, I created a film and launched an online sculpture course.
Involved in the local art community, I served on the Board of Trustees at Black Swan Arts, Frome, and was a Rep for Somerset Art Works for many years. I am now on the Programming Committee at Black Swan Arts and Director of The Old Stores Studios, Evercreech.
