Frans Brand is a sculptor who studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts in the early 1970s. Shaped by the spirit of that era and inspired by artists such as Joseph Beuys, Richard Serra, Laurie Anderson, and Bruce Nauman, his contemporary work explores the human condition within today’s complex world. He translates these emotions and experiences into simple materials such as stone, marble, and metal, using them in a poetic way to give shape to the emotions and stories of his creations. In his drawings, the figures often appear as stark silhouettes, their posture revealing the journey and life story they carry within them. His sculptures, through the choice of stone, its texture, and the combination with roughly worked metal strips, feel softer in expression while addressing the same universal themes: fear and trust, love and grief, and the art of letting go.
