Besma was born in Breda, Holland to immigrant parents, and relocated to Tangier, Morocco during her teenage years. This pivotal move profoundly shaped her understanding of identity and culture. Pursuing her interests in the arts, she later studied visual arts and photography at Sint-Lukas Art School in Brussels.
Both a visual artist and creative director, Besma has a pronounced interest in community work, especially in rural landscapes. She co-founded Round Edge, a woman-led arts organization based in Brussels. Her work, influenced by her travels around the world, offers a panoramic view of diverse cultures. She works on various community endeavors, from evocative art installations to transformative workshops.
Today, Besma divides her time between Tangier, southern Spain, and Brussels, drawing rich inspirations from each context for her art and community undertakings. Her creations echo her personal journey of residing amidst varied cultures, encapsulating both the challenges and the opportunities of managing multiple identities. Delving deeper, her work contemplates the interplay of space and society, particularly urban development. With a discerning eye on urban informalities and a contemplation on the duality of the formal and informal, she ventures into the intricate dynamics of space definition, redefinition, and the core constituents of place-making.
