My
work is concerned with the fragility and precariousness of all life,
particularly in relation to climate change and habitat loss. I use delicate and
ephemeral textile pieces to evoke life forms and scenarios, real and imagined.
Stitch,
manipulation and collage are my favoured techniques, with paper and silk fibres my preferred materials.
I was
awarded a grant by Arts Council England in 2021 to develop a body of work about
environmental disintegration. This became Fragile Earth and has been shown in solo exhibitions in the UK and abroad.
An
installation from this body of work, Fragile Balance, was awarded the
President’s Prize by Peter Randall Page at the Make Southwest maker’s summer
exhibition 2023, another was sent to Finland in an exchange with an art
cooperative there.
I have
created installation pieces for Wells Cathedral as part of Wells Art
Contemporary in 2022 and 2024 , had pieces accepted into the John Ruskin
Prize in 2024 and 2025 and exhibited with Xtant in Palma, Mallorca.
Two
art residencies in Australia have been very influential on my work since I
became a full-time artist after giving up a successful teaching job in Further
Education. A paper costume ‘After the Bushfires: Regeneration’, inspired by the
bushfires in SE Australia in 2019/20, won First
Prize at Paper on Skin, Tasmania, a wearable paper art award, in 2024. Another
paper costume piece ‘Disasters of War’, looking at the plight of women and
children in war, recently won the Major Award at Fiber Art Contemporary in
Pittsburgh, USA.
I have
a first-class honours degree in Textiles and Surface Design. Please see my
website for further information about my exhibiting profile and my
qualifications
