In appearance, Abel Azcona (Madrid, 1 april 1988) seems to confirm that frequented
common place according to wich the most natural work is still the artist himself. He has
made of his body and presence an indispensable territory for experimenting, taking them as
a source material and using them as a detonator for every creative process. His artistic work,
considered to be highly autobiographical, is manifested in a variety of mediums wich are
first conceived as performances and then evolve into instalations, sculptures, videos,
painting or writings, disciplines with wich he explores subjects that encompass both global
issues and human rights, social injustices, gender, diversity, inequality, terrorism or religion,
and situations and personal experiences such as abandonment, violence, abuse, child
mistreatment, deprivation of freedom and prostitution.
His work has been created and presented in important museums, institutions and
contomporary art galleries like the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art, the Art Leage Houston,
the Ramirez Villamizar Museum of Modern Art, the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York,
the Museo Norte de Santander, the Contemporary Art Centre of Málaga, the Modern Art
Museum Barranquilla, the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, the Alicante Museum of
Modern Art or the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bogotá, wich dedicated him a
retrospective exhibition in 2014, consisting of a wide selection of his works. It has been
displayed in international events as well, such as the Lyon Biennale, the Asian Art Biennale
in Dhaka and Taipei, the Miami Performance International Festival, the Tupa Tupada Manila
Biennale in the Philipines, the Bienal de Performance de Santo Domingo in the Dominican
Republic, the Bienal de Arte Vivo de Bangladesh and the Houston International Art
Biennale in the United States.
