In every shift of light, another self awakens.
Meaning
The End of Flatness explores the shifting boundaries between perception and reality, where identity is never fixed but constantly in flux.
Inspired by the artist’s 45-year personal experience with bipolar disorder and severe panic attack, the work embodies the duality and multiplicity of the self — where manic brightness and shadowed anxiety coexist.
Description
The work challenges the limits of a flat canvas by creating an optical depth that changes with the viewer’s movement.
Two similar portraits were layered, then cut and carved with knives and scissors to reveal fragments of each.
This layered relief transforms the surface into a dynamic, almost kinetic experience: as the viewer shifts position, the expression subtly changes, mirroring the volatility of human emotion.
Bold color contrasts and dimensional textures form a psychological landscape, inviting the viewer to witness transformation itself.
Technique
Layered Canvas Relief Technique – Two completed paintings were superimposed, with the upper canvas cut, incised, and punctured using knives and scissors to reveal fragments of the underlying image. This layered relief creates shifting expressions that change depending on the viewer’s angle, merging painting with sculptural depth.
