My artistic practice began as a response to the social expectations placed on me as a woman. At the age of twenty-five, when I chose to study abroad in Japan instead of following the path of marriage, I experienced criticism from relatives. This tension became the catalyst for my work, which explores identity, multiplicity, and the coexistence of different ways of living.
The inverted cat head has become my central symbol. In Chinese and Western traditions, black cats were often labeled as unlucky or even dangerous, yet they are also admired for their beauty, independence, and mystery. This duality reflects the complexity of social values and marginalized identities. By turning the cat’s head upside down, I visualize a shift in perspective—an invitation to reconsider fixed roles and cultural judgments.
In combining the “unlucky” cat’s head with the “auspicious” dragon’s body, once reserved for emperors, I aim to challenge hierarchies and rewrite symbols of power. My works seek to transform inherited images into inclusive visions that question gender roles, cultural boundaries, and the possibilities of coexistence in contemporary society.
