Angela Wei is a Canadian artist based in New York. Born in Chengdu and raised in Vancouver, she studied Art History and Visual Arts at Barnard College of Columbia University, and is currently pursuing an MFA in Studio Art at NYU. Angela began her creative career in fashion media, writing for publications such as Fashionista, Architectural Digest, Surface, Christie’s, and Elle, and was shortlisted for a CLIO award for her design work on a national billboard campaign with Vice Media. During the pandemic, she returned to painting, developing a signature style that merges dreamlike landscapes, vibrant color palettes, and cartoon-inspired figures with darker psychological and political themes. Her large-scale acrylic paintings draw from influences like Japanese superflat aesthetics, Chinese scrolls, kawaii culture, and Renaissance precision, often exploring surveillance, childhood memory, and identity. Angela has exhibited in solo and group shows including Neither Here Nor There at The Living Gallery, Arcus at Rachel Uffner Gallery, and Genesis at Chambers Fine Art. Her work has been featured in benefit auctions with Christie's New York, Artsy and collected by private buyers across North America. Through a playful yet critical visual language, Angela reflects on themes of displacement, hybridity, and repressed memory, building a world that feels both fantastical and deeply personal.
