About me!
I am Mary Joy Manuel—a passionate art lover, music connoisseur, and traveler whose creative spirit is nourished by museums, culture, and the simple joy of good food. Born in the Philippines and holding a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, I have called Germany home since 1997, settling in the quiet town of Rehden in 2003. While my professional path led me to a career in office administration, my heart has always belonged to the arts.
My creative journey began in childhood, sparked by an early fascination with photography. Even then, I was drawn to the stark beauty of black-and-white images. Monochrome remains my go-to technique—its timeless elegance and emotional depth continue to captivate me. In black and white, every line, every shadow, every contrast becomes more pronounced. It strips away distraction and reveals the soul of the subject. For me, monochrome photography is not just a style—it’s a language of attitude, strength, and mystery.
As a self-taught visual artist, I rely on intuition and emotion to guide my hand. My paintings—expressive, abstract, and often touched with impressionism—invite viewers into a world of texture, movement, and raw energy. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, I explore the interplay of color, form, and feeling, always seeking to evoke something visceral and true.
After the heartfelt encouragement of my niece, I began submitting my work to art contests and open calls—an experience that has helped me further hone both my painting and photography skills. These opportunities have pushed me to grow, experiment, and connect with a broader artistic community.
Since 2024, I’ve proudly exhibited my work in “Kunst in der City,” sharing pieces that reflect my evolving vision and the pulse of my inner world. Art is my way of answering a calling that transcends the boundaries of my daily life. It urges me beyond the familiar landscapes of Rehden and into the unknown, where creativity leads and I follow.
The journey is uncertain, but I embrace it with boldness. Each photograph, each brushstroke, is a step toward something greater—a deeper connection with myself, with others, and with the world.
