Zsuzsa Horváth – Artistic Statement
I live and work in Budapest as a visual artist, architect, and art educator. I graduated in architecture from the University of Art and Design (2002), and later earned a teaching degree in fine arts from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (2016). During my studies, I was a scholarship student at the Glasgow School of Art. I have worked as an interior architect, teacher, and autonomous artist.
My artistic practice lies at the intersection of kinetic and conceptual art. Through geometric forms, I explore the relationship between space, sound, and perception. My sculptures, made of plywood sheets and nylon strings, produce sound when touched—becoming sound sculptures that are simultaneously spatial forms and resonating bodies.
At the core of my work is the elusiveness of time. I am inspired by the writings of physicist Carlo Rovelli, who describes time not as a continuous flow but as a network of relations and changes. In my sculptures, spatial proportions, curves, and string lengths function as a visual score: geometry becomes the spatial counterpart of musical structure.
I also draw inspiration from the sound-based installations of Zimoun, the sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia, and minimalist music built on repetitive structures. These influences permeate my work, where form and sound are not separate elements but parts of a unified system.
My 2012 work, Waves of Calypso, created for the Cartasia Biennale, dealt with the spatial representation of time: a large-scale geometric installation visualizing the flow of time.

For me, the artwork is not an illustration but a state: a form existing at the threshold between silence and resonance, latent energy and activation. The viewer is not a passive observer but a participant in the present moment.
