"Tragedy of the Sea" is a painting composed of two scenes: "The Embarkation" and "The Shipwreck," which narrate a journey from hope to death. The colors, elements of the composition, and the depersonalization of the subjects constitute the materialization of a universal cry of pain.
The Boarding
Human traffickers are cramming hundreds of innocents onto rickety and rusty boats, fully aware of the fate that almost certainly awaits them. The sky is livid and reflects in a murky and leaden sea, much like the conscience of the tormentors. The air is heavy, time stands still; the situation is irreversible.
The Shipwreck and Death
The journey from hope to death has ended in a shipwreck. One of the few survivors is struggling to reach the shore. The sea has just calmed but is still crossed by swollen waves where the lifeless bodies of the shipwrecked float. The fury of the storm has literally broken the rickety boat in two. The sky has slightly cleared, but not enough to alleviate the situation, which remains irreversible
