Based on Akshita Gandhi’s research into women’s plight for reproductive and sexual rights in India this ongoing series of paintings, lightboxes, poems, and immersive installations presents Gandhi’s personal vision of empowerment. Combining vibrant colors, broad brushstrokes, and text textured paintings Lust, Sin, Desire, and Freedom IV-V rebel against the current suppression of women. To create her signature lightboxes, Gandhi prints digital renderings based on her paintings onto acrylic sheets mounted in backlit frames. Both anchored within and emerging from the Indian context, Gandhi seeks to meld local and universal contexts of historical and contemporary human right’s to be located within larger global frameworks provoking emotional receptivity.
