The fashion industry, second only to the oil sector, stands as a significant global polluter. In my homeland, Australia, almost 80 percent of discarded textiles end up in landfill. Eight billion garments are produced globally each year and 400% more clothes are produced now compared to 20 years ago.
A Material World No 3 emerges as a fusion of AI-crafted composite imagery, blending my landscape and still-life photographs. Draped in fabric, vegetation struggles to survive, poignantly signifying the dire consequences of textile waste.
This work stands as a reminder of the beauty of nature and the ramifications of rampant consumerism and fast fashion on the natural world. It urges reflection and serves as a quiet but steadfast call for mindfulness and the protection of life on Earth.
