In my opinion, art has always played a fundamental role in any speculative process ever conducted by our society; it's in fact for art that the cerebral shift between left and right hemisphere occurs, thus making us draw on a different vision. If before, however, art had well defined tasks, first of all that to raise the human spirit with a constant research of beauty, today, in our liquid modernity, it is no longer so clear what its role is. We are constantly bombarded with visual information and the achievement of that state of contemplation to which a beautiful thing leads is increasingly difficult. We have become so capable of investigation our without world that we have forgotten the existence of a world within, fundamental to be able to exercise the most important action that we now know to be our real instrument of voluntary modification of our surroundings: to think. Hence art must take on a new and very important role: it must, in my opinion, became a place of awareness; a place where the normal logic, with which we normally look at things, is subverted and which allows us to enter more deeply into problems; place that gives the opportunity to draw again on that contemplative state that was once the prerogative of artworks. The contemporary work of art must reflect society and therefore allows us to see what we live with eyes that are different from the usual logic. Here I compare the oil painting and the video, bringing out differences and similarities between them, but above all by asking, through the work's title, on what the modern canvas could be; where the canvas is intend as that three-dimensional space of awareness that a contemporary painter is led to achieve.
