Looped
three-channel HD video for synchronized playback on smartphones; color,
stereo sound, 04:30 minutes
Inspired
by Bruce Nauman’s “Please Pay Attention Please,” and reimagining it for the
Internet age, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION explores the omnipotence of
mobile screens in our lives. The piece explores the tension between the newest data-mining commodity -- our attention
-- and the “context collapse” in meaning that occurs on the
screens we can't seem to live without. These
screens are simultaneously our
window to the wider world, while also controlling and commodifying everything from information to
human connection. Ranging from
“influencers” to our perceived “parasocial relationships” with online personae,
the attention economy has altered our most fundamental and universal needs.
