Gustav Mahler gave the fourth movement of his second symphony, generally known as the resurrection symphony, the designation „Urlicht“ (primal light). About 130 years later, images taken by NASA‘s Hubble space telescope have given a new, scientific meaning to „Urlicht“. Violent accumulations of intergalactic materials, illustrated by this visible-light photograph of the „Lagoon Nebula“, represent what has been called stellar nurseries. Here is my attempt to illustrate a stellar nursery in a quatroscopic treatment of a colour-enhanced version of Lagoon Nebula to the tune of Gustav Mahler‘s second symphony's fourth movent „Urlicht“.
