Collective doubt is our present cultural condition. As a society we are inclined to doubt the singularity of grand narratives, including religion and spirituality. Violence and armed standoffs all over the world who claim allegiance to different religions demonstrate the continuing importance of religious identity. The role of art in establishing and preserving religious identity is painfully evident whenever one group destroys religious monuments of a rival group in an attempt to eradicate the beliefs and culture the art represents. The line between the religious and secular , or the sacred and the profane is not always clear-cut. Artists may deliberately transgress boundaries in order to challenge their validity."
