Melquivedeque Moreira, known as Japanese Black, tattoo artist and designer, 28 years old, born in Pará and currently living in Rocinha;
This work is part of project Morro pela Arte Viva.
This project was conceived and developed from the graffiti of Morro da Rocinha, located in the neighborhood of São Conrado, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The objective for Arte Laguna Prize 2020.21 at the Venice Arsenal is to project a series of three to ten photographs of Rocinha's graffiti, along with a video about the project with a 125 seconds duration. The projection of those photographs will be carried out in a large format directly on the walls of the Venice Arsenal.
Morro pela Arte Viva is a gathering of the graffiti in Morro da Rocinha, made together with the graffiti artists, residents of the community. The main goal was to create an online art gallery, for the artists and the public. That was made possible by the publication on Instagram, at morropelaarteviva. Morro pela Arte Viva is a street art project created to give Rocinha artists more visibility and a more resonant voice.
The project intends to disseminate and make possible a set of works that otherwise would not be feasible due to the political, cultural, and socioeconomic context.
Therefore, the proposed project for Arte Laguna Prize 2020.21 aims to digitally project, on the walls of Arsenale di Venezia, the graffiti made in Rocinha. To overtake and overflow their territory and enjoy their visibility around the world.
We would like to see, even if metaphorically, the encounter between the graffiti from Rocinha and the frescoes in Venice.
