Can we communicate with abandoned spaces?
How should we deal with them?
I was born in a small town on the outskirts of Turin, where a major economic and social crisis has condemned the area to abandonment and decay, affecting the agricultural and industrial areas. By carefully looking inside the abandoned spaces that this phenomenon has produced, we can perceive the misuse of the resources at our disposal. We can sense the traces that time leaves on everything, the signs of transformations that have taken place and the forerunner of what the future holds for spaces and humanity in general. This phenomenon is clearly visible in Trino Vercellese, where the flat horizon of the countryside is interrupted by the disturbing silhouettes of the two towers of the (former) nuclear power plant, built near the agricultural village of Leri. Among several rural houses the villa of landlord Count Cavour – architect of the Italian unification and promoter of important agricultural innovations in that area – stands out. Over the past fifty years this place was progressively depopulated due to the mechanization of agriculture, and eventually it was completely abandoned because of the construction of the power plant, losing definitively its function. Even Cavour’s historical house was condemned to oblivion and decay. While exploring the ghost village reduced by now to a state of peeling walls and crumbling roofs one wonders why nobody bothered to protect it and preserve the important history behind it. My work entitled “Cantun Früst” (in Piedmont’s dialect “consumed village”) – part of the larger series “dialogues with abandonment” – develops in several stages. After a first inspection of the site I collected various materials I found here and there (old cement tiles – fragments of the lost nobility of the court – and rusty irons – a memory of daily work). Then, I created a squat-shaped structure from which three large pipes come out. It holds together the elements of a stove, representing the cornerstone of community life of the village farmers, with a structure that in terms of function and aesthetics refers to the shape of the power plant's towers. The final step was to bring my composition back into the village, in front of the looming skyline of the power plant, giving the impression that its component fragments were taking shape to tell the past. So I lighted some smoke bombs inside it ensuring coloured clouds came out of the pipes/chimneys, slowly taking over all the surrounding space, blurring the outlines of objects and drawing the attention of the outside world. This final performance highlights the strong discord existing between the fate of the village, which although being harmoniously integrated in the territory it isn’t needed anymore and is abandoned to decay, and the nuclear power plant, an impending monster out of context that contributed to the abandonment itself. The performance was filmed and the video is played in a loop on a monitor alongside the work. Last time I performed in the village I met some locals who were starting an organization for the protection of that long-forgotten place.
