Aurea Duo (“The Golden Couple”) is a contemporary sculpture by artist César Henao, sponsored by Swiss philanthropist Léonard Gianadda to commemorate the centenary of the appellation “La Romaine” of Vaison-la-Romaine. This work of art, inaugurated on June 15, 2024, symbolizes the union of the region’s rural foundations with its rich archaeological heritage.
Description
Aurea Duo is a piece of kinetic art composed of 3,768 steel tubes. These tubes are intricately arranged to form the visages of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and his wife, Empress Sabina (2nd century AD). The faces of Hadrian and Sabina, whose statues were discovered in 1912 at the ancient theater of Vaison-la-Romaine, are prominently displayed at the municipal museum. The design of Aurea Duo captures the dynamic essence of these historical figures through the shimmering and reflective qualities of the steel, creating an impression of movement and life.
Background
The town of Vaison-la-Romaine, located in Provence in the south of France, is renowned for its vast Roman ruins and historical significance. It boasts the largest archaeological park from the Roman period in France, with notable sites such as Puymin and La Villasse. The celebration of the centenary of its new name in 2024 marks an important milestone for this two-thousand-year-old town. This prompted the municipal authorities to enrich the cultural landscape with a commemorative sculpture. Léonard Gianadda, an honorary citizen and great Swiss patron of the arts, financed this project as part of his efforts to support arts and culture in the region.
Design
The sculpture’s design is notable for its use of kinetic aesthetics and its intricate assembly of steel tubes. This construction technique allows the piece to interact with light and shadow, providing a constantly changing visual experience. The tubes’ arrangement and the overall structure are intended to evoke a sense of timelessness and continuity, bridging the past with the present. The choice of materials and the abstract representation highlight the enduring influence of Roman heritage on contemporary culture.
