花,像 (Liken to Flowers) is a painting & botanical sculpture installation that immortalises the pity of cut-flowers. Plants as metaphorical devices go way back in art history and devoid of an emotive face, they have heightened utilities as representational strategies of a human. A flower tribute extends the imagery of commemoration and the act of giving fresh flowers for well-wishes and condolences is a practice made common. Contrary to the intent, cut flowers are in their dying process once removed from the main plant and with this suggested outlook, it is definitely quite an ironic idea to send dying flowers for well wishes. The installation is a continued pursuit of investigations on the clouded disappointments, regrets, loss and love in life.
Using Limonium sinuatum, a type of flower with paper-thin petals that retain colour well even after its expiration, clouds of deceivingly fresh flowers are created to float mid-air, lending lightness and gentleness to the grim topic of death. Also commonly known as Statice or Sea Lavender, the flower shares a language and expression of sympathy and remembrance.
Another important component of the installation is a painted flower portrait the same flower through a mist, ruminating the blur view through the mist of death. At the same time, through the lens of mist's water molecules, the view breaks down into a vibrant spectrum of colours life can provide when death loses its sting.
