The project is devoted to personal choices which together make a global statement.
Visualities of the project refer to the urgent environmental problem of ocean garbage that has international scale out of bounds of geographical and political context. The photo collage is based on real space imagery of the area so called garbage island in the Pacific ocean. Mixing satellite images with photos of garbage and the boat taken by myself in Venice channels in May 2019 underlines human technological progress and environmental pollution as its verso. On the other hand this is a part of my personal story: I graduated Geographical Department of Moscow State University and built a career on the international Earth observation market.
The boat has many connotations from balance and dynamics to migration in modern global and personal history. At the same time the boat relates to issues of personal responsibility in the international context as we are all in the same boat called “Planet Earth”. To make this message clear I have made the boat from maps that were collected by myself around the world. Moreover it fully matches to the “reduce-reuse-recycle” approach.
The photo collage consists of 144 separate photos which together compose a global picture. Based on recent research the mankind has 12 years to change the ecological situation before the point of no return will be passed. Thus humans have 144 months to make a choice. Photos are pinned on the canvas to highlight that this is first of all art interpretation but not science research.
I’ve tried to make a comprehensive statement, environmental issues can lead to next layer of questions. Every human every time chooses own life path to be conformist, revolutionist or emigrant.
All of us co-exist on the planet, co-existing means compromises but what is it about? It matters what integrity is broken. Are you ready to adapt yourself to the environment? Or do you prefer to work for better changes even it can sink your boat? Probably you would escape to spend efforts in another context. There are only three ways of interaction that could be chosen. This is personal choice for everyone, however all of them create a global statement. I have made my choice. What is yours?
