Our existence is characterized by polycatastrophes. Today, around 40,000 animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. Currently, more than 100 million people worldwide are on the run. Around 400 wars are currently raging on five out of seven continents, and more than 275 million people worldwide are dependent on humanitarian aid. Never before have the global challenges been so complex, the suffering so great.
If we fail and destroy the world, the Earth's ecosystem will belong to the fascinating organisms of algae and fungi and lichens - beings with low levels of organization that already live in our ecosystem with millions of different species. They will reclaim the planet.
Orientation, then, becomes a complex, challenging, sometimes seemingly impossible enterprise. The choice remains between failure, struggle, death. Nevertheless: hope remains.
