"Box" is a micro-algae growing box fabricated in 2019. It's part of a family of experimental prototypes and installations conceived to act as photobioreactors to grow micro-algae within the built environment. While growing, the solution purifies air, creates a beautiful green light, and a relaxing water sound. It is something to be taken care of. It contains something very similar to the Primordial Soup where it all began.
It's part of the cycle "Closed Waters", installations made in transparent material, glass or different kinds of plastic, contain living solutions of water and microalgae. They are free style interpretations of what in science is called photo-bioreactor. They do not seek efficiency in the growing rates of the living organisms contained in the water medium. They investigate the hypnotic effect that moving and bubbling water solutions have on human senses. They act to bring people in a temporary different state of consciousness with a weak awareness of the outside, and a higher awareness of what’s happening inside the body and mind. Closed Waters engage a state of open mind in which it’s easier to accept the precariousness of human beings, brought to light by the presence of these apparently weak creatures, the micro-algae, that have been the very first living organisms of Earth, long long before the appearance of the first hominis.
