This project looks at human existence and consciousness around death. Interested in how the inescapable inevitability of death affects the way we live. Without the limits of time, everything is meaningless. Only through death, we do realise the importance of the moment. That is the basis of humanity.
The more I practice and study this, the more I feel that all humans are very small in the universe. The question of philosophically and scientifically approaching existence itself excludes religion. Man has no memory of choosing to be born. But they all die because they are born. It's scary to have to face the unknown. This unfair fact makes us uncomfortable and I make work by looking at it cynically.
This work is telling that -‘We are such small things'. But at the same time, it questions that -‘Are humans really insignificant?' I think the antonym of 'time' is 'death'. Time is absolutely necessary for 'being'. No individual can exist without time.
What would the opposite world of 'the world of time' be? Humans imagine because they cannot know the future, and humans feel anxious because they cannot know. Death is inevitable. In the limit of time, we constantly strive. But the end is death after all.
The clock rings every hour serves to inform the audience that time is passing.
There is a proverb in Korea that 'A married couple’s fight is cutting water with a knife (부부 싸움은 칼로 물 베기)' means that there is no point in the action. Inspired by 'cutting water with a knife, I wanted to express the meaningless existence of human beings and the repetition of humans' daily life. The robots repeat the same movement just like humans do every day, however, this action hurts themselves.
The more I create and struggle, the more ironic my practice is.
This paradox is the point of my artwork. The repetitive lives of humans, the consequence of which is the meaningless disappearance of existence due to death.
