The proposed exhibition takes the form of a
table set with a series of objects created in the technique of overglaze
painting on ceramics. The artist creates dirty dishes with the help of painting
over ready-made ceramic pieces, such as plates, dishes, and cups. Used,
sometimes chipped and cracked, sometimes luxurious tableware made of the finest
Chinese porcelain becomes the basis for creating an overglaze painting
depicting dirty dishes.
We usually take for granted a hand painted
plate as a luxury item. We rarely think about the fact that it may be
stained with food residue. Therein lies the ambivalence of the artistic
project. Dirty dishes are unnatural to the delicate and jewel-like
hand-painted plates. The painstaking and expensive technique of creating
overglaze painting emphasises the vanity of the mundane, because no matter how
expensive the meal, the plate will still be stained.
In the project, the artist focuses on the
dirty dishes that disappear from the table as soon as we finish a meal. In the
remnants of sauce, bits of spices, nibbled bones the artist sees a new pattern
or ornament that symbolises the futility of our existence. In her project, the
artist conducts research, collecting dirty plates from all over the world from
people with different social backgrounds, and comes to the conclusion that at
the end there are no social, gender, or age differences. This project
erases the differences between people and puts everyone in front of a mountain
of dirty dishes that must be washed in order to start eating again some time
later.
