The sculptural object offers itself as pair of severed feet, as if they were stepping on squared sod. It takes its inspiration from Andersen’s The Red Shoes controversial fairy tale, and focuses on the voluntary act of the main character to depart from a pair of shoes that has become too unwieldy. The abandonment of shoes and the subsequent sacrifice of her feet, in order to wear a new pair made of wood, becomes a symbol of redemption, but not necessarily in a Catholic meaning, as it was the case in the nineteenth century fairy tale.
In this artwork, two roughed feet reveal a severed section showing the red matrix of temperament belonging to who wears them: to restore the importance of the person and his being, to reduce the symbolic power of the shoe and circle it back to bare feet, with their relationship with the earth and nature.
As in Andersen's fairy tale, the shoe is permeated with many symbolic meanings, including the spectrum of the appearance. The shoe is the filter we need to live and to find the right detachment from our wild side. We use it to impose ourselves on the environment, to eliminate threats, to make us independent beings. A seeming detachment from what it is real, and from uncertainty.
On the other hand, the bare feet belong to a girl who feels this burning red flowing into her, but she does not need to flaunt it with a pair of pretty shoes; she prefers the connection with the earth, starting over by rediscovering the roots.
The squared shape encloses a clod of living biomass and at the same time recalls Instagram’s feed format: today's squared snapshots, once Polaroid, which no longer gives us a single authentic shot.
The installation is accompanied by the tinkling sound of a water drop, immersive and primordial. Square root suggests a way to live harmoniously in the world: feet on the ground (and for the earth), in connection with living organisms.

L’oggetto scultoreo si presenta come una coppia di piedi mozzati, come se calpestassero una zolla quadrata. S’ispira alla controversa fiaba di Andersen Scarpette rosse, in particolare al gesto volontario della protagonista di allontanarsi da un paio di scarpe diventato troppo ingombrante. L’abbandono delle scarpe e il sacrificio dei piedi, per indossarne un nuovo paio in legno, diventa simbolo di redenzione, non necessariamente di matrice cattolica, come invece è nella fiaba ambientata nell’Ottocento.
Nell’opera, due piedi appena sgrossati mostrano sul taglio di sezione la matrice caratteriale rossa di chi li indossa, per restituire importanza alla persona, al suo essere; ridurre il potere simbolico della scarpa e restituirlo ai piedi nudi, al loro rapporto con la terra e la natura.
Come nella fiaba di Andersen, la scarpa si carica di molti significati simbolici, anche della sfera dell’apparire. La scarpa è il filtro di cui abbiamo bisogno per vivere, per trovare il giusto distacco dalla nostra parte selvaggia. È uno strumento per imporci sull’ambiente, che ne elimina le minacce, che ci erge a esseri indipendenti. Un apparente staccamento dal reale, dall’incertezza.
I piedi nudi invece sono di una ragazza che sente un rosso ardere e fluire in lei, ma non ha la necessità di ostentarlo con delle belle scarpe; preferisce il contatto con la terra, ripartire riscoprendo le radici.
La forma quadrata dell’opera incornicia una zolla di biomassa viva e nel contempo richiama il formato Instagram: l’istantanea quadrata di oggi, un tempo Polaroid, che non ci fornisce più uno scatto autentico.
Nell’installazione è accompagnata dal tintinnio di una goccia d’acqua, elemento sonoro immersivo e primordiale. Radice quadrata ci suggerisce una modalità per vivere armoniosamente nel mondo: con i piedi per terra (e per la Terra), in connessione con gli organismi viventi.
