‘Sad Little Sister’ (SLS) represents the relationship between weakness and self-control. Intense colour and voluptuous textures fuel a sense of desire and repulsion. SLS looks both delicious and disgusting. Her appearance is both seductive and repellent, provoking an internal struggle.
The sense of collapse reflects on the turbulent and uncertain times of today, and yet the tightly bound form reflects a need for order. SLS exists in between borders, an abject space of ambiguity and enigma. The abject holds powers of fascination as well as horror, and it is here that the work exists.
SLS is the little sister to Coral, a 500kg sculpture I made which now resides in Spain. Coral represents the start of collapse, created in March 2020. SLS carries on that same collapse, shouldering the residue of the burden which Coral carried. SLS conveys a sense of frustration, fatigue, and fading hope.
