Made with cone 10 stoneware and wood, The Rusty Portrait was created and then abstracted from a mold of a woman's face with the hand building and slip casting processes. It involved experimentation with acids that react to the iron in the clay. Each acid had a unique color and texture that would form on top of the clay. It gave the ceramic sculpture a patina effect that made the piece feel aged like an artifact. The base is constructed out of wood and then painted to look like it has rusted over time.
The Rusty Portrait has to do with the mind struggle and adventure that ensues when you have left something that you are passionate about and then return to it.
